Pattern Name: Wheel of Chance
Age: 1870s-1880s
Quilting: utility quilting - hand pieced and hand-quilted
Material: turkey red calico, various calico scraps with muslin borders and backing
Measurements: 85x60
Heritage: This quilt was found in Alabama and is one of the most beautiful quilts. The turkey red is simply remarkable and in such great shape. The wheels are done with a treasure trove of calico shirtings and other scrap materials including mourning fabrics. The sash and blocks are solid beige calico. There is black quilting thread throughout - hinting at its early age. The quilt is simply stunning and quite striking and one of the most lovely wheel quilts I have had the privilege of stewarding.
Condition: Overall the piece is in fair condition for its age. The quilt itself is quite sturdy, there are a few small tears here and there, but nothing major. There is evidence of wear to the fabrics throughout the quilt, most notably at the borders. This quilt was cherished and used - but has maintained its shape. There are signs of storage stains throughout. Great care was taken to store and care for the quilt. With proper care, it will last many more years.
